Coronavirus: Senator Matthew Urhoghide gives N500,000 to families as palliatives in Edo

- Nigerian politicians have continued to show love and support to their constituents who are most hit economically by the coronavirus pandemic

- Urhoghide gave the sum of N500,000 to families in his constituency in Edo South senatorial district

As Nigeria continues to fight coronavirus that is ravaging the country, a Nigerian senator, Matthew Urhoghide has brought hope to several families in his senatorial district in Edo South as he donated half of his salary at the National Assembly to the COVID-19 Eradication Fund.

Legit.ng gathered that Senator Urhoghide who disclosed this on his official Facebook page on Thursday, April 16, said that the fund is for palliatives to the poorest of the poor across the country.

The palliatives package which is about five hundred thousand naira (N500,000) is aimed at cushioning the effects of the coronavirus pandemic in the state.

He said: "As I said before, I will continue to do for the good people of Edo South Senatorial District and indeed, all Edo people, what God empowers me to do for them. Distance has not hindered me so far and will not hinder me, going forward. My support within my abilities will not be denied Edo people.

Within this period of the scourge too, I have caused as much as a total of N33,500,000 (thirty three million five hundred thousand naira only) to be given out to 67 Edo State indigenes with each family getting N500, 000 (five hundred thousand naira). The money was handed out between March 29 and April 11, 2020."

The senator representing Edo South senatorial district went on to note that he has engaged in sensitization campaigns within Edo state to let people know about coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the deputy Senate president, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has begun efforts to support residents in his constituency in Delta Central senatorial district as a way to help them cope with the harsh effects of coronavirus.

In a statement made available to Legit.ng, Yomi Odunuga, the special adviser on media and publicity to Omo-Agege, said that local government areas that benefitted from the senator's kind gesture include Ethiope East, Ethiope West, Okpe, Sapele, Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Udu and Uvwie.

According to Innocent Emosivwe Anidi, the head of the committee that coordinated the distribution of the funds, the money which came down to N5,000 to the poor households targetted was given on Sunday, April 12.
