Deontay Wilder blames defeat to Tyson Fury on heavy costume
- Deontay Wilder disclosed that his embarrassing first career defeat to Tyson Fury was because of his weighty costume
- The former WBC champ was deposed of his championship via a seventh-round TKO
- Wilder said the costume, which was made to celebrate Black History Month, was too heavy for him as it weighed 40 pounds
Deontay Wilder earlier admitted there was no excuse for his loss to Tyson Fury but it seems the dethroned American heavyweight king has found one.
Wilder's reign as heavyweight king was brought to a disappointing end on Sunday, February 23, at the iconic MGM Grand Garden Arena with a seventh-round stoppage.
The Bronze Bomber failed to replicate his long-established dominance, losing the control of the game from the first bell to the Brit and it took the intervention of his coaching crew to save him from Fury's brutality.
Wilder has now revealed that he lost the heavyweight showdown to Fury because his three-stone costume was too heavy for him.
The 34-year-old wore the expensive 40-pound majesty-like costume for his ring walk into the fight against Fury in what expressed his confidence.
But in a sudden turn of event, Wilder was saved from Fury's brutality with his corner throwing in the towel following perceived eardrum damage.
Speaking with Yahoo, the former heavyweight champ said: “He didn't hurt me at all, but the simple fact is my uniform was way too heavy for me.
“I didn't have no legs from the beginning of the fight. In the third round, my legs were just shot all the way through.
“I was only able to put it on (for the first time]) the night before but I didn't think it was going to be that heavy. It weighed 40, 40-some pounds with the helmet and all the batteries.
Wilder also disclosed that the costume was made to celebrate Black History Month.
“I wanted my tribute to be great for Black History Month. I wanted it to be good and I guess I put that before anything.” the 34-year-old further submitted.
