CJN Muhammad wants parts of Sharia accommodated in Nigeria’s constitution

- The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Tanko Muhammad, wants the country's constitution amended to accommodate sections of the Sharia law

- Justice Muhammad also wants sharia law given separate faculties in tertiary institutions

- The CJN says Muslims have the number to amend the constitution to address concerns by Muslims

A report by Daily Trust indicates that the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Tanko Muhammad, is advocating for an amendment of the country's constitution to accommodate sections of the Sharia law as well as concerns by Muslims.

The report said CJN Muhammad made this position when he spoke at the 20th annual judges conference at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria.

Muhammad, who was represented by the grand khadi of Niger state, Justice Muhammad Danjuma, also urged academics to be at the forefront of coming up with methods of teaching sharia law.

He also said his suggestion can fully make meaning if sharia law is allowed to have its own faculties in tertiary institutions.

“As we all know, there are sections of the constitution that allow the implementation of sharia personal law and apart from that, we cannot do more.

"However, we have the number to emend the constitution to suit our own position as Muslims," he said.

He also advocated for an increase in judges learned in sharia law so that such suggestion can be met.

He argued that because of its importance, sharia law is supposed to be taught in Arabic language in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

“The sharia law should be taught in Arabic not English. There is no university in Nigeria that runs sharia in Arabic," he lamented.

The event was said to have been organised by the Centre for Islamic Legal Studies (CILS) of ABU in collaboration with National Judicial Institute (NJI), Abuja.
