5 points of insight into rap legend Eminem’s life

International rap legend Marshall Bruce Mathers III - aka Eminem - turned 47-years-old on Thursday, October 17. The impact he has made on the hip-hop genre is undeniable.

Known as one of the most controversial and best-selling artists of the early 21st century, Eminem’s story changed the face of hip-hop, especially for white artists.

Legit.ng knows that Eminem had a turbulent upbringing. All the suffering that he went through moulded him into the rap sensation that he is.

The American rapper, record producer and actor made history by producing the fastest-selling rap album in history with his 2000 album, The Marshall Mathers LP. He has sold over 230 million records to date!

1. Turbulent upbringing

Eminem never knew his father, Marshall Mathers Jr. His father abandoned the family when Eminem was only a baby, leaving his mother, Deborah Mathers, to raise him on her own.

If you have listened to his music you will know that Eminem and his mother did not have a good relationship. Deborah was allegedly addicted to prescription drugs and exposed Eminem to endless emotional and physical abuse.

2. Schooling and education

Dropping out of high school at the age of 17 after having failed the ninth grade three times, Eminem turned to the one thing he was good at to express himself, English.

Eminem read endless comic books and even studied the dictionary. Language was his outlet and what ultimately led him to become one of the greatest rappers in history.

3. Eminem’s love life and daughters

At the age of just 15, Eminem met his first love, 13-year-old Kim Ann Scott, at a house party. Kim ended up moving in with Eminem and his mother after she claimed to have been sexually abused by her stepfather.

In 1995, Kim and Eminem had their first baby girl, Hailie Jade Scott. They got married for the first time in 1999, divorced in 2000, got married for the second time in 2006 and just a couple of months later divorced for the final time.

Aliana Scott Mathers, aka Lainey, is Eminem and Kim’s adopted daughter. They took guardianship of Lainey when Kim’s twin sister passed away in 2006; Eminem loves her like she is his own.

There is also Marie Mathers and Whitney Scott Mathers, who are Kim’s daughters from other relationships, who Eminem also took legal guardianship of.

Eminem 'destroyed' the Detroit rap scene even though he was a blue-eyed white boy. He became a frequent competitor in rap "battles" and lyrically wrecked almost anyone who took him on.

This time of his life was made into a semi-autobiographical film called 8 Mile.

5. The beginning of his legendary career

Eminem was noticed by Dr Dre after he sent in a mix tape to his studio. Dr Dre thought Eminem was an African American and was taken aback when he met him and saw that he was white.

Shortly after Eminem produced his first album, Infinite, in 1996, his career took off like wildfire. Eminem went on to sell over 80 million albums worldwide, making him the biggest in the game. Eminem, a white boy from Detroit, ran circles around hip-hop legends such as Biggie Smalls, Tupac Shakur, Jay-Z, Dr Dre, NWA, Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg.
