Independence Day: Thousands throng New York streets to celebrate Nigeria

- Nigerians in New York thronged out to celebrate the nation's independence on Saturday, October 3

- At the Independence Day Parade, an annual celebration of Nigerians in the American city, there were personalities from different walks of human endeavours in attendance

- At the parade, there were displays of the country's music, food, and culture as Nigerians displayed their pride

In celebration of the country’s independence, Nigerians in the diaspora trouped out in Manhattan in New York on Saturday, October 5.

The people jubilated as they marched with bands in a decorated colour of Nigeria’s flag through the 54th and 44th streets on Second Avenue, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Those who participated in the Independence Day Parade also wore hats and T-shirts that were branded in the nation’s colour.

It should be noted that the Independence Day Parade was created in 1991 and is popularly known as the most recognised and largest coming together of Nigerians in America.

The event also celebrates Nigeria as it displays the nation’s food, music, and culture. The parade event is handled by the Organisation for the Advancement of Nigerians (OAN) in conjunction with the Nigerian Independence Day Committee.

The parade has people and organisations from different areas of human endeavours. Some of them include the New Jersey Chapter, Association of Nigerian Nurses, among others.

Tijani Muhammed-Bande, the president of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, the consul general of Nigeria in New York, and others, led the parade.

The UN president said that there are many reasons to celebrate the country, urging the participants and Nigeria as a whole, to look past their differences and unite to advance the country.

A 27-year-old resident of the city who is from Imo, Gorge Onuorah, said that though things are not the way they should be home, he is proud to be a Nigerian.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Google, the world's giant search engine, celebrated Nigeria with its special doodle as the country marks its 59 years of independence.

The Google doodle is used to mark special occasions and individuals around the world. The special logo, according to Wikipedia, has been in use since 1988 when it first honoured the long-running annual Burning Man event in Black Rock City, Nevada.
