Jose Mourinho has challenged new Chelsea boss Frank Lampard to "grow up" through experience if he has to become a big hit at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho has insisted Lampard has everything it takes to become a success at the Blues, months after making a return to the club as manager.

Lampard was thrown straight into the top job following the departure of Maurizio Sarri who left in the summer for Juventus.

The Englishman's appointment drew criticism from a section of fans and pundits who argued the former midfielder lacked enough managerial experience to lead Chelsea.

However, Mourinho believes Lampard will succeed as manager at his former side due to the 41-year-old's general knowledge of football.

"He plays Champions League, he played a European Super Cup, he had already big matches in his hands, and he has to grow up with the level of experiences, which I believe he can because he has huge experience.

"I cannot separate from the fact that football has been always in his life. He was born son of a player, he grew up the nephew of a football manager (Harry Redknapp), he became a player, he became a top player. I think he has all the conditions to succeed,'' Mourinho explained according to report on Metro UK.

Meanwhile, despite Lampard's shaky start to life at Stamford Bridge, he has managed to turn around the tides, with the west London side currently sitting sixth on the log.
