27-year-old Nigerian Uber driver stabbed to death in New York

A sad news just hit the ground recently and many Nigerians cannot get over the sadness that has accompanied the report. It has been said that a Nigerian guy was stabbed to death in New York, United States, by an unknown person. The man who was an Uber driver in that part of the country was 27 years old when he was killed.

As reported, the man was killed in the Bronx on Saturday, March 2, 2019. The man whose name was Ganiyu Gandonu died while working and transporting passengers with his Toyota Camry.

Shortly after 9pm, he was found by cops inside his car along the Hutchinson River Parkway East in Baychester, New York City. According to the police, he was bleeding from his neck and torso, he later died at Jacobi Medical Center.

At the moment, the police are looking for his attacker and investigating whether the death of Gandonu was the consequence of a robbery incident. A CCT video was later uncovered by the police in which a "person of interest" was spotted in the area where the murder took place.

The man who is now wanted escaped the scene while on foot. He was last seen walking northbound on Co-op City Boulevard wearing dark clothing and a hood. It is not known whether the "person of interest" was a passenger.

What is known is that he was driving a passenger at the time but whether he completed a trip is not known. The police are offering a reward of $2,500 (N904,950) for anyone who is able of leading them to the killer.

It is also said that Gandonu drove for Uber and had received his for-hire vehicle license in January 2017, according to the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission. An Uber spokesperson had this to say with regards to this issue: "This is a horribly tragic incident and our hearts go out to the grieving family, an Uber spokesperson said. We stand ready to work with law enforcement to assist their investigation in any way possible."

Even more, a local drivers group took to offering anyone who could supply them with viable information a sum of $3000 (N1,085,940). The Independent Drivers Guild, which represents some 70,000 drivers for all ride-hailing companies in NYC had this to say:

"We are horrified by the death of our fellow for-hire vehicle driver and our thoughts go out to his loved ones. We must continue to do more to protect the safety of for-hire drivers. We call on anyone who may have witnessed the attack to contact the police so that the culprit may be brought to justice. The Independent Drivers Guild is offering a $3000 reward for any witness who can provide information that leads to the arrest of the killer and helps police bring them to justice."

Ganiyu Gandonu's wife gave more details about what happened before his death. In an interview with News 12, he had left their home around 7pm on Saturday to work a shift picking up passengers, but he never came home.

Latifat Alimi, the wife with whom Ganiyu has a two-year-old son had this to say when she heard about her husband's death.

"My husband doesn’t deserve this. My husband was a very quiet man, a very hard-working man. He always said, 'I'm working hard for my son so he doesn't have to.' I want to look that person in his face. I want to know the reason why he [did] it, because I know for sure he doesn't got any reason, she said of the killer. 'He took the wrong person.'

"I don’t know how my life’s going to be without him. I know for sure that he got no problem with anybody. He start this job. He worked. After work, he’s home. He don’t go to parties, met friends, go to clubs, nothing, nothing nothing." She also said that before her husband left for work, he complained, saying: "I’m tired, but I have to go and make money. He said, ‘I’ll call you back. I have a customer.'"

Apparently, her beloved husband never came back.

Recently, a Nigerian teenager was stabbed to death in London. The young man named Malcolm Mide Madariola was just about 17 years old when he was killed.
