Senate shuts down following siege on homes of Saraki, Ekweremadu

The Senate is expected not to sit on Tuesday, July 24, following the siege on the homes of its principal officers, Bukola Saraki and Ike Ekweremadu.

The homes of both men were barricaded by security operatives from the Nigerian Police Force, the Department of State Security in conjunction with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday morning, Punch reports.

Legit.ng gathers that in reaction to the development, an aide to Ekweremadu, who refused to be quoted, reportedly stated that the upper legislative chamber would not sit, as plenary was supposed to begin at 9am.

He stated: “The siege is still on as of 8:30am when I got there, and I cannot even confirm the whereabouts of my boss at the moment.

“The implication of both actions is that the Senate will not sit today if the two presiding officers were still deprived of their freedom of movement or arrested before plenary which starts at 9am."

Recall that Legit.ng previously reported that the convoy of Senate President Bukola Saraki was blocked by operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad unit of the Nigeria Police Force, from leaving his Maitama residence in Abuja.

The policemen reportedly stormed the residence at about 6am and prevented vehicles from coming in or going out of the home of the Senate president.
