Osun 2018: Omisore picks SDP governorship form in Abuja

- The political conversation in Osun is getting intense by the day as the state prepares for a governorship election in September

- A prominent politician in the state, Senator Iyiola Omisore, has joined the race

- Omisore is seeking the ticket of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to win the main election

Senator Iyiola Omisore on Friday, June 21, picked his expression of interest/nomination form for the forthcoming Osun state governorship election at the national secretariat of the SDP in Abuja.

Accompanied by his supporters, Omisore, a former Senate committee chairman on appropriation, expressed confidence that he will get the party's ticket and win the main election.

Ife-born Omisore is a businessman and politician who was deputy governor of Osun state from 1999–2003.

He recently formally announced his switch to the SDP from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Sunday, May 20.

“It is with great concern that I have made a very expedient decision today, to withdraw my membership from PDP and join the SDP; a party that believed in a balanced, equitable and truly functional Nigeria.

“On the platform of the SDP, I shall with the support of my supporters, followers, and the electorate of the state, seek the nomination to contest for, and by His grace, be elected as the Executive Governor of Osun state on September 22, 2018," Senator Omisore said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the speaker of Osun state House of Assembly, Dr. Najeem Salaam, has debunked some media reports suggesting he has ditched his governorship ambition based on a Lagos meeting he had with the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, in company of Governor Rauf Aregbesola and the state chairman of the party, Prince Gboyega Famodun.

According to the speaker, at no time was he asked to step down for any aspirant during the Lagos meeting.

He made this known in a statement sent to Legit.ng by his chief press secretary, Goke Butika, stressing that he is currently engaged on how the political atmosphere would be managed in the state without any hitch.
