Senator Akpabio denies report of his planned defection to APC

- As 2019 approaches, rumours will play a huge role in political permutations

- Political watchers will read the body languages of politicians to gauge their next move

- This seem to be what Senator Godswill Akpabio is facing at the moment, but he has cleared the air

The Senate minority leader, Godswill Akpabio, has denied rumours that he plans to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) soon.

Akpabio also proved his loyalty to this party - the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by endorsing the second term bid of Governor Udom Emmanuel, Daily Sun reports.

He however urged the state government to show evidence of governance especially in his senatorial district - Ikot Ekpene, to convince the people to vote the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019.

Akpabio made the comment at the end of year get-together of the senatorial district on Sunday, December 31, 2017.

He stated that 2019 governorship election would not be an easy task for the PDP, urging the government and the party supporters to work harder.

“All is not well; don’t allow people to tell you that all is well. All is not well. You have mentioned a hotel in Ikot Ekpene. If it is allowed to rust, is that a good thing. What of the road from Uyo to Ikot Ekpene? At least one lane should been completed.

“Let me ask; for the 2018 budget, what is the percentage for Ikot Ekpene senatorial district? I don’t have any aspiration to control a state. I had finished my two terms and left. So, my job is to tell the truth; because if at this age I am not telling the truth, automatically, I am not leading you well,” Akpabio said.

He urged the deputy governor, Moses Ekpo and other political office holders from the senatorial district to bring development back to their people.

“So, all this rumour that Akpabio is going to APC is a mere rumour. The truth is that Akpabio is advising us to make our path straight. The moment we have done that, we are going to move in one direction.

“I want to endorse the governor of the state for 2019. I am supporting him; I am supporting the re-election of the governor. But, I want us to also think of the senatorial district. In thinking of the senatorial district, if things are not going right, let us right them so that people would not frown on the day of the election,” he added.

Meanwhile, the APC recently lost its only member in the Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly to the PDP.

The House of Assembly member, Asuquo Archibong, decamped to the PDP late last year during the flag-off of the party’s campaign for the local government council elections in the state. ]

Archibong decamped to PDP alongside other members of APC including Sunny Elijah who is popularly referred to as the “the strongman of Nsit Atai politics.”
