The collapse of a church in Uyo has left Nigerians in a sober mood this weekend. The church was said to be filled to its capacity following the consecration of its pastor as a Bishop when the incident happened.

The death toll from the collapse which occurred on Friday, December 9, has hit 200, according to reports.

While doctors battled to get blood for the injured, the mortuaries in the city of Uyo are overflowing from the tragedy, said Etete Peters the medical director of the university of Uyo teaching hospital.

The Reigners Bible Church International was still under construction and workers had been rushing to finish it in time.

While they waited for the crane, Mr Eyibio a computer analyst present at the scene, tried to help a man whose legs were trapped under a steel girder.

"I rushed to my car, got out the tire jack and used that to get the beam off his legs. We managed to get him out but we saw others dying all around us."

According to Daily Trust, Sani Datti, NEMA's head of media and public relations, while spesking in Abuja said that 115 persons were injured as a result of the incident.

Datti also explained that the emergency response team conducted a 360 degree search at the scene, both in and outside the church, adding that no casualty was left behind.

He also noted that all the patients with head injuries have been evacuated from private clinics to specialist hospitals.
