He encouraged believers to seek divine intervention, asking God to “grant us peace and justice and to wipe away the tears of those who suffer because of the ongoing armed conflicts.”
The call comes amid ongoing violence in several parts of the world, including the protracted war in Ukraine and renewed tensions in the Middle East. Pope Leo’s appeal is seen as a continuation of the Church’s long-standing tradition of spiritual solidarity with those affected by conflict.
Pope Leo’s papacy and advocacy for peace
Leo, the first U.S. pope in history, was elected by the College of Cardinals on 8 May following the death of Pope Francis. Since assuming the papacy, he has made repeated calls for an end to the war in Ukraine. His first known diplomatic outreach was a phone call to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in May, followed by an in-person meeting in July.
The pontiff’s emphasis on peace has been a defining feature of his early leadership, echoing the efforts of his predecessor. Pope Francis had previously declared a special day of fasting and prayer in October last year, marking the one-year anniversary of the Israel-Hamas war.
Catholic tradition of fasting and prayer
Fasting is a deeply rooted practice in Catholicism, often observed on or before significant spiritual occasions. It is viewed as a means of drawing closer to God through prayer and reflection. Pope Leo’s call aligns with this tradition, inviting the faithful to unite in spiritual action for global peace.
As the world continues to grapple with the consequences of armed conflict, Pope Leo’s appeal serves as a solemn reminder of the power of collective prayer and the enduring hope for justice and reconciliation.
