Edo State, Nigeria

Edo State is situated in the South-South region of Nigeria and shares borders with Kogi State to the northeast, Anambra State to the east, Delta State to the southeast and south, and Ondo State to the west.

Population

In 2006, the population of Edo State was recorded as 3,233,366 people. The state’s population was expected to reach about 8,000,000 in 2022.

History

Edo State was created on August 27, 1991, when the former Bendel State was divided into Edo State and Delta State. The modern borders of Edo State encompass a region that was once home to various empires and kingdoms formed in the 11th century AD, including the Benin Empire. The ancient city of Edo, now known as Benin City, was home to some of the largest artworks in the world.
