Newcastle's rocky Premier League build-up

The match pits Matthias Jaissle's Newcastle against Andoni Iraola's Liverpool in what is a significant occasion for both clubs.

Newcastle finished their pre-season without a win in three matches, having suffered a 4-1 friendly loss to Bristol City shortly before Jaissle took charge.

His side edged past Valencia, lost to both Everton and Bayer Leverkusen, and drew with Strasbourg, conceding and scoring in each of those four outings.

According to Sports Mole, the Magpies also enters the season having parted ways with Eddie Howe, Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon following a troubled 2025-26 year.

Injuries are piling up too, with Joelinton sidelined for a couple of weeks due to a groin problem.

Tino Livramento is also still recovering from a calf issue that ruled him out of England's World Cup squad, meaning new signing Amar Dedic could start from the off. Summer arrivals Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba are in contention to make their full debuts in midfield.

On the positive side, history offers Newcastle some comfort. They have avoided defeat in each of their last four Premier League opening-day fixtures, and Jaissle has won his first match in charge at each of his previous three clubs.

Liverpool's injury and transfer concerns

Iraola arrives at Anfield with high expectations after being appointed as Arne Slot's successor, with supporters hoping he will revive the high-energy football associated with the Jurgen Klopp era.

Liverpool warmed up with a confident 2-0 win over Como, but they carry their own concerns into matchday one, per Yahoo Sports.

Curtis Jones is reportedly on the verge of a £30 million move to Inter Milan after picking up a hip problem, while World Cup finalist Alexis Mac Allister has only just returned to training.

Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai are expected to form the double pivot in midfield, with Rio Ngumoha filling the role vacated by Mohamed Salah.
