Victor Boniface has opened up on who convinced him to join Werder Bremen on a season-long loan after his proposed move to AC Milan collapsed.

He endured a difficult second season riddled with injuries and lost his place under Xabi Alonso to in-form Czech Republic forward Patrick Schick.

The Nigerian forward was deemed surplus to requirements at the end of his second season and was close to joining Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, but the deal collapsed.

Erik ten Hag’s arrival did not change much for him as he pursued a loan move with an option to buy at AC Milan, but it collapsed after he failed medical checks.

Why Boniface joined Werder Bremen

Boniface looked set to stay at Bayer Leverkusen and accept a limited role, but things accelerated quickly on deadline day, and he joined Werder Bremen.

The striker, speaking to the club's official website in his first interview, has confirmed how the deal happened and who convinced him to make the move.

“Everything just happened so quickly, which I was pleased about. I had some great conversations with the people at Werder, which gave me a good feeling about the move. I’m so happy to be here,” he said.

The Super Eagles forward admitted that he had a difficult past week, which made it easy for Werder Bremen to convince him about making the switch.

He added that his former Royal Union Saint-Gilloise teammate Senne Lynen played a key role in convincing him to move to Werder Bremen.

“Senne texted me four days ago just asking if I was alright and if there was a possibility of this move happening. I texted him back and said it would be difficult,” he added.

“I texted him again two days ago to tell him that things had changed slightly. He’s a good friend of mine, and I had a great time with him in Saint-Gilloise.
“We’ve spoken a lot about how much he enjoys both the city and the club, which I found very helpful.”

Both players left Saint-Gilloise together in 2023 and headed for Germany, with the Nigerian moving to Leverkusen, while the Belgian moved to Bremen.

As noted by Transfermarkt, Boniface's contract at Bayer Leverkusen expires in the summer of 2028, but he is not expected to return as he will explore a permanent move away at the end of his loan.
