Boniface had travelled to Italy to finalise a transfer to the Rossoneri, with personal terms agreed and a club-to-club deal in place.
However, AC Milan pulled out of the deal after medical tests raised concerns over the striker’s knee, given his history of two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries.
In a twist of fate, Milan opted to sign Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku instead, leaving Boniface in limbo.
Bremen rescues Boniface after failed Milan move
After failing to secure a dream move to AC Milan, Boniface returned to Bayer Leverkusen, with the hope of securing a transfer before the summer window closed.
With hopes fading and the transfer deadline closing, Bundesliga side Werder Bremen swooped in and signed the Super Eagles striker on loan, Foot Africa reports.
Boniface also successfully passed his medical with Bremen, clearing the final hurdle to complete the move.
According to Get Football, the loan deal runs until June 2026, with part of his wages to be covered by Bayer Leverkusen.
For Bremen, the signing of Boniface is a major boost to their attacking options as the Nigerian forward comes with the experience that is needed to keep the club in the Bundesliga.
A statement against doubters
By completing his medical and sealing the move to Werder Bremen, Boniface has effectively silenced critics who doubted his fitness after failing his AC Milan medicals.

The rejection from the Rossoneri could have damaged the Nigerian forward’s confidence, but instead, he has used the opportunity to bounce back stronger.
Boniface joins a long list of Bayer Leverkusen stars who have left the club this summer, including Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka, Jonathan Tah, Jeremie Frimpong, and coach Xabi Alonso.
For the Super Eagles, Boniface’s consistent playing time at Bremen will also be crucial ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
After being dropped for the World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa, joining Bremen will be an avenue for the 24-year-old forward to prove himself again and secure his place back in the Super Eagles squad.
A fit and firing Boniface could prove invaluable as Nigeria prepares for continental and global competitions.
