Manchester United suffered a humiliating defeat in the second round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, August 27.

The Red Devils lost 12-11 on penalties to League Two opponents Grimsby Town, after coming back from behind to equalise in the second half.

New signing Bryan Mbeumo's miss on the second attempt around the penalty kick ensured the club did not make it to the next round.

Grimsby are currently unbeaten against Manchester United in their last three meetings (1946, 1947 and 1948).

How did the match turn out?

In the first half, the League Two team took the lead through Charles Vernam in the 22nd minute after beating goalkeeper Andre Onana.

In the 30th minute, former United academy player Tyrell Warren doubled the lead after Onana committed another error as he failed to punch the ball, according to BBC.

Fifteen minutes to the end of the game, substitute Bryan Mbeumo pulled one back before Harry Maguire equalised in the 89th minute.

During the penalty shoot-out, Matheus Cunha failed to secure victory in United's last spot-kick of the regulation five, and Mbeumo's second penalty hit the bar to hand Grimsby a 12-11 shootout success and trigger a pitch invasion from the jubilant home fans, per The Sun.
