Diogo Jota’s widow got emotional during Wolverhampton Wanderers’ tribute to her late husband ahead of their match against Manchester City.

Wolves opened their Premier League season against Manchester City at the Molineux Stadium and had activities in honour of their late player Jota.

Jota and his brother André Silva sadly passed away from a car accident on Thursday, July 3, while he was on his way to catch a ferry to England.

The former Portugal national team player married his long-term girlfriend Cardoso, with whom he had three children, 11 days before his tragic passing.

Jota's widow emotional during Wolves' tribute

Wolves paid tribute to their former player Jota with a giant banner which reads: “We’ll remember you when you walk in the fields of gold.”

As noted by Mail Sport, the line on the tifo the fans erected in the stands was in reference to Diogo Jota's favourite song, Fields of Gold by Sting.

Jota's widow, Rute Cardoso, was in the stands, in the company of Wolves' former captain and Jota's friend, Ruben Neves and other family members.

Diogo Jota's record at Wolves

Jota played for Wolverhampton Wanderers for three seasons and won the hearts of the fans with his performances on the pitch and his infectious smile.

He joined the club in 2017 on a season-long loan from Atlético Madrid before making the deal permanent after helping the club gain promotion to the Premier League.

As noted by Transfermarkt, he featured in 131 matches over three seasons at Wolves. He scored 44 goals and provided 19 assists, and won the EFL Championship in 2018.

One of his most standout moments came during the UEFA Europa League run in the 2019/20 season, when he scored back-to-back home hat-tricks against Besiktas and Espanyol, the first player in the club’s history to do so.

He left the club in the summer of 2020 when Liverpool signed him for a reported £41 million, where he played until his unfortunate demise in July.

He helped the club win the Premier League title last season, playing a crucial role in Arne Slot becoming the fifth manager to win the title in his first season.

The Reds retired his number 20, which he wore to help them win their 20th title after joining in 2020, thus becoming their forever number 20.

Legit.ng reported that Arne Slot paid tribute to Diogo Jota after Liverpool beat AFC Bournemouth 4-2 in the opening match of the new Premier League season.

The manager applauded the fans for how they honoured the memories of their former player and noted that his family, who were in the stands, would be proud.
