- Bruno completed a transfer to Man United for £46.5 million in January 2020
- The deal entailed a number of clauses and several of them have already been met
- The final add-on clause will need Bruno Fernandes to win the PFA Player of The Year
Manchester United will have to pay Sporting Lisbon up to £4.2m if Bruno Fernandes wins the PFA Player of the season award.
This is according to a clause which The Times reports was included in the contract when United signed the Portuguese superstar in January 2020.
So far, the 26-year old has been an integral part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s success since joining the Red Devils, and has netted 22 times already in all competitions this season.
If his performances are anything to go by, Fernandes is well on course to clinch the award at the expense of other Premier League stars.
According to The Times, there is also an add-one payment if Bruno Fernandes finishes among the top three of the Ballon d'Or nominees.
So far, two of the add-on payments in the deal to acquire Fernandes have been fulfilled.
One of them was if Fernandes made 25 starts for United, the club would pay Sporting an installment of £4.2m.
The other add-on clause entailed an extra £4.2m installment if Manchester United qualified for the Champions League, which they did.
The add-on clause entailing Bruno winning the player of the season award is the last in the bonus payment, and United will not need to transact with the Portuguese club further on matters concerning Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes has been so crucial for Manchester United that former Chelsea defender recently came out to suggest the Old Trafforfd outfit.
Cundy was particularly critical of the fact that United had a tendency to have below-average performances when Fernandes was not at his best.
The Red Devils have a tricky fixture list on the horizon as they face Manchester City in the derby on Sunday, March 7 before another tough Europa League encounter against AC Milan.
