Ahmadu Fintiri, the governor of Adamawa State, who recently dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has said he did not have any grudges with the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who was also from his state, adding that they have only parted ways politically.

The second term governor of Adamawa State, explained that he did not see any reason why a northerner should contest for the 2027 presidential election, adding that the south should be allowed to complete its eight years before power would be shifted to the north.

Fintiri's comment could be regarded as a covert message to the former vice president, who has been positioning himself as a preferred presidential candidate in the 2027. When asked about the claim that it was democratic and the best candidate should be allowed to win the election and that there is no constitutional backing that the south should retain power for eight years.

The governor responded that it was not a matter of constitution but that of morality and equity in the country. He recalled that he was a foundational member of the ruling APC before joining the PDP. He stressed that his ambition was to see the unification of the country, which informed his decision to support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

Governor Fintiri was the latest governor of the PDP who dumped the party for the APC. His defection made the ruling party to have the control of 31 of the 36 states under it. Current, the PDP, who was the ruling party between 1999 to 2015, now left with three governors.

The current three PDP governors are Seyi Makinde of Oyo state, Bala Mohammed of Bauchi and Dauda Lawal of Zamfara state. However, there are reports that Governor Lawal could also be dumping the party and join the APC ahead of the 2027 election.

Governor Fintiri's interview has started generating reactions from some Nigerians. Below are some of their comments:

Saif said Fintiri did not make such statement when seeking re-election in 2023:

"But he didn't say this when he was seeking re-election in 2023."
