The race for the 2027 presidency between President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar took a dramatic turn last week with a bold declaration of loyalty and the realignments of long-standing alliances.
This is as two obvious events indicate that President Tinubu and his major political opposition, Atiku, are in a struggle to inherit the northern bloc of supporters of the late President Muhammadu Buhari.

When did Buhari died?
The former president died on Sunday, July 13, in the United Kingdom. Vice President Kashim Shettima led the federal government team that coordinated his remains' repatriation into the country. He was given a state burial at his residence in Daura, Katsina state, where several dignitaries, inside and outside Nigeria, were present and were led by President Tinubu.
On Friday, September 19, the president paid a courtesy visit to the residence of the former president in Kaduna and met with his widow, Aisha Buhari.
On the other hand, Atiku hosted some state chairmen of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the original party of Buhari, before the 2015 alliance that birthed the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), at his residence in Abuja.
Speaking on the meeting, Atiku said he hosted the former CPC state chairmen to brainstorm about the 2027 general elections. The leader of the national coalition movement stated that the meeting resolved to form a partnership and a strong force to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 election.
Tinubu vs Atiku: Nigeria is experiencing legacy trial
According to Vanguard, Nigeria is currently experiencing its most obvious "legacy trial" since the APC was created. The political weight of Buhari, which was assumed to be locked within the APC, is not being contested.
If President Tinubu cannot hold the legacy line, the APC may become a party in decline. On the other hand, if Atiku and his recently adopted political platform, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), can turn the gesture into a tangible structure, they could win the narrative and get the votes in the 2027 elections.
Nevertheless, the contest for the 2027 election has already begun, and Buhari's loyalists are taking their paths. Atiku has seized the moment, and Tinubu's visit to Kaduna remained a counter-move in the drama.
The question is no longer about who will inherit the legacy of the former president but how deep the loyalty may shift and the chances of it reshaping the electoral map.
