2027 Election: 14 Political Parties That May Emerge According to INEC, Full List Released
- INEC has announced that only 14 of the 171 associations seeking to register as political parties made it through the first stage

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that only 14 of the 171 associations, including the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), seeking to be registered as political parties, have passed through the first stage of the process.
Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, disclosed the development in a statement on Thursday, September 11, at the end of INEC's regular meeting in Abuja.

The commission also explained that the 14 pre-qualified associations' names and acronyms have been published on its website and its other platforms for public consumption.
According to the commission, the associations' interim national chairmen and secretaries should attend a briefing at INEC's headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, September 17. Thus, further verification would be outlined at the event.

INEC speaks on new political parties
INEC earlier announced that the number of associations seeking to register as political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections has increased to 171. Olumekun said that the number increased following the submission of 19 additional letters of intent.
Olumekun added that the updated list has been published on the commission's website and other official platforms of the electoral body, according to the statement he released on Thursday, September 4.
The statement reads in part:
“Since our last update, 19 more letters of intent have been received, bringing the total to 171 as of September 3, 2025. Details of the latest submissions are available on our website.”

INEC uploads newly proposed political parties
He further explained that the review committee, saddled with the responsibility of assessing the applications, has completed its assessment and submitted recommendations for final consideration.
The Punch reported that INEC urged applicants to exercise patience and stay away from actions that could jeopardise their approval.
Earlier, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the electoral body, announced that 110 associations have submitted letters of intent to become political parties while speaking at the second regular consultative meeting with journalists at the INEC headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, June 25.
Baba-Ahmed speaks on 2027 election
Legit.ng earlier reported that President Bola Tinubu's former aide, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, criticised the coalition movement being led by former vice president Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai.
Baba-Ahmed, in an interview, explained that the current leaders in the coalition movement are not different from those in the ruling APC.
Recall that Baba-Ahmed served as an aide at the office of Vice President Kashim Shettima before resigning, and he was the former spokesperson of the NEF.
