Tinubu, Atiku, Jonathan, Obi or Amaechi: El-Rufai Hints at Preferred Presidential Candidate

  • Former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai has said he has no preferred presidential candidate in the 2027 elections
  • The former governor made the clarification in Imo, stating that no government has worsened the country in two years like that of President Bola Tinubu and the APC
  • El-Rufai then called on the people of Imo state to go for voter registration, adding that the southeast states have been recording low turn-out

Nasir El-Rufai, the immediate past governor of Kaduna state, has hinted that he did not have a preferred presidential candidate in the coalition movement, adding that he is more interested in having someone who will take Nigeria out of poverty.

The former governor made the comment while addressing members and supporters of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Imo state on Saturday, September 6, adding that no government has ruined the country in just two years like President Bola Tinubu in Nigeria's history.

When El-Rufai dumped APC for SDO

El-Rufai, who was a founding member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), dumped the party two years after the emergence of President Tinubu and the rejection of his ministerial nomination by the Senate over security concerns.

He had earlier defected to the SDP but later joined the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar-led coalition, which recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC). However, El-Rufai noted that the adoption of the ADC was just of first step of the opposition leaders' move to sack President Tinubu in 2027.

According to El-Rufai, even the leading opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), would soon join the coalition, while urging the people of Imo to go for voter registration, adding that the southeast state is one of the states with the least voter registration.

El-Rufai and the coalition movement

El-Rufai has been at the forefront of the coalition campaigns against President Tinubu. The movement has been joined by other opposition leaders, including Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate and Rotimi Amaechi, who lost the APC presidential ticket to Tinubu during the party's primary.

Like Atiku, Amaechi, and Obi have declared interest in contesting the 2027 presidential election against President Tinubu. Amaechi and Obi have vowed to rule for one term to allay the fear of northerners, but El-Rufai recently said no one believes such a promise.

Recently, former President Goodluck Jonathan has been dragged into the race following the zoning of the PDP presidential ticket to the south. The PDP has said it was considering the chance of fielding Jonathan in 2027 or bringing back Obi to run on the ticket.
