2027 Election: 'Why Peter Obi, Amaechi Should Stop Making One-Term Commitments,' El-Rufai Shares

Kaduna, Kaduna state - Ahead of the 2027 election, Nasir El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna, on Sunday, August 31, said presidential hopefuls Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi should stop making one-term promises.
According to Mallam El-Rufai, no one believes the duo's one-term pledge.

The former All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain spoke in an interview on ‘Sunday Politics’ programme on Channels Television, monitored by Legit.ng.
Recall that in August, Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, restated his vow to serve for four years if elected president in the 2027 election.
Citing the leadership examples of Abraham Lincoln, John Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela as justification for his pledge, Obi said he does not need eight years to turn the country around.
Similarly, Amaechi, former minister of transportation, said he is willing to be a one-term president in 2027 if he secures the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

El-Rufai sends message to associates
Asked his thoughts on the promises, El-Rufai said Obi and Amaechi should know from experience that four years is not sufficient to deliver meaningful reforms.
El-Rufai's words:
“Now, on the question of people coming out and saying, ‘I will do one term’, I don’t think anyone believes that.
“I don’t think it is right. You should not constitutionally give up what is yours. And frankly, as someone who has been governor for eight years, and Amaechi and Peter Obi have both been governors, they know the time it takes to make meaningful change in government. Four years is not enough.”
Furthermore, El-Rufai stated that politicians who pledge to serve only one term eventually change their minds once in office.
He added:
“So, I want to appeal to everyone to stop making these commitments of ‘I will do four years’ or ‘I will do eight years’, because nobody believes you."

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that El-Rufai dismissed rumours of a fallout with his successor, Governor Uba Sani, insisting that the two were never friends.
El-Rufai clarified that while he mentored Sani and played a major role in his rise to the governorship, their relationship was not one of friendship.
El-Rufai stated this amid reports that the duo were at loggerheads following his criticisms of the federal government’s policies and the Kaduna state government.
