In a recent interview aired on ChannelsTV on 29 August, Nigerian human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju voiced serious concerns regarding his interactions with Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi during the 2023 election cycle.

Adeyanju explained that his initial support for opposition unity stemmed from a desire to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He stated that he had been enthusiastic about Peter Obi’s candidacy and even suggested that Rabiu Kwankwaso should serve as Obi’s running mate. However, he maintained that his involvement was purely based on political observation and not partisan interest.

“In 2023, I criticized APC and asked oppositions to come together. I was just expressing my political views at the time. I was excited by Peter Obi’s candidacy and even said at the time that Kwankwaso should deputize him,” Adeyanju said.
Peter Obi accused of attempted bribery by Deji Adeyanju
According to Adeyanju, Obi made persistent efforts to contact him, which he initially resisted due to his non-partisan stance. He eventually agreed to meet the former Anambra State governor, during which he claimed to have raised concerns about corruption allegations surrounding Obi.
“All of a sudden, Peter Obi reached out to me. He was persistent in reaching me and I was avoiding him because I never wanted to support any politician. I am not partisan. I eventually met him and told him I could not support him but shared my observation with him. I also raised the issue of the corruption allegation against him. Peter Obi tried to offer me money when I met him but I refused,” Adeyanju alleged.

The claims have sparked renewed debate over political ethics and transparency in Nigeria’s electoral process. As of the time of reporting, Peter Obi has not publicly responded to the allegations.
Adeyanju’s remarks have added a new layer of scrutiny to the post-election discourse, particularly concerning the conduct of political figures during campaign periods. The alleged bribery attempt, if substantiated, could have implications for public trust and accountability in Nigerian politics.
