FCT, Abuja - Ahead of the 2027 election, Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), has reaffirmed his resolve to support a presidential candidate who genuinely wants Nigeria to develop.

Wike, who made a guest appearance on Channels Television's 'Politics Today' programme, on Tuesday, August 19, monitored by Legit.ng, maintained that no sentiment or emotion would determine his political stance.

He said:

“I will support somebody who I know will make Nigeria to grow, somebody who has the interest of Nigeria at heart. I don’t believe in sentiments, I don’t believe in mere emotion.”

Asked if power should remain in the south in 2027, Wike replied:

“It should still be (in the south).”

Legit.ng reports that in the buildup to the 2023 presidential election, Wike, who was governor of Rivers at the time, solicited votes for Bola Tinubu — abandoning Atiku Abubakar, flagbearer of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Tinubu, who would go on to win the general election, polled 231,591 votes in Rivers while Atiku secured 88,468 votes.

On May 3, 2023, just days before his swearing-in, Tinubu said he could not have won the presidential election without Wike’s support.

Tinubu said:

“I couldn’t have done it without some structural support you gave me which I can’t describe or repay."

Tinubu would later appoint Wike as minister of the FCT.

Ahead of the 2027 presidential election, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain President Tinubu and Atiku of the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition are expected to mobilise votes and increase their chances of winning.

Labour Party (LP's) Peter Obi, meanwhile preferred to take to social media to reach out to his young, urban following.

Aware of the issues that will dominate the votes, Tinubu, Atiku and Obi have all promised to revive the battered economy and fight spreading insecurity as well as endemic corruption.
