A renewed call for former President Goodluck Jonathan to re-enter Nigeria’s political arena has emerged, as former presidential aspirant Mathias Tsado urged his close associates to persuade him to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday, Tsado—who previously ran for president under the Liberation Movement in 2019—argued that Jonathan’s leadership was essential to address Nigeria’s deepening economic and security crises.

“We need him back in 2027. This is not about politics but about saving Nigeria. He has the experience, the temperament, and the vision to bring our country back from the brink,” Tsado stated.

He emphasised that Jonathan’s previous tenure had laid the foundation for democratic reforms and values that could be revitalised to restore national stability. According to Tsado, many Nigerians still view the former president as a unifying figure capable of bridging divisions and fostering peace.

Jonathan’s leadership style seen as key to national recovery

Tsado appealed to Jonathan’s political allies to intensify efforts in convincing him to run, stressing that the country was at a pivotal moment.

“Those around him should speak to him with one voice. Nigeria needs him more than ever. His leadership style is what can calm tensions and redirect the economy,” he added.

The appeal comes amid growing speculation over potential contenders for the 2027 presidential race. Although Jonathan has not publicly expressed interest in returning to office, Tsado maintained that the former leader remained the most viable option for steering Nigeria towards recovery.

Political observers have noted that Tsado’s remarks reflect a broader sentiment among some factions seeking experienced leadership to navigate the country’s current challenges.

Jonathan alleges election malpractice in 2025

Legit.ng earlier reported that former President Goodluck Jonathan alleged that the card reader, which was introduced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), allegedly rejected him as a sitting president and prevented him from voting during the 2015 elections.

In an interview that has gone viral, Jonathan maintained that INEC's card reader also rejected many voters in the Southern region of the country, including his wife, the then-First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan and his mother, from performing their civic responsibility. However, Jonathan added that instructions allowed everyone to vote without accreditation in the north.

Meanwhile, In a similar development, Legit.ng reported that Rotimi Amaechi, the former Minister of Transportation under the immediate past administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, has accused INEC of collaborating with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to manipulate upcoming elections. Amaechi made this assertion after he announced his resignation from the APC, citing dissatisfaction with the party’s leadership and direction.
