Atiku, Tinubu or Obi: Ex-SGF Babachir Mentions Who North Will Back in 2027

The former secretary to the government of the federation, Babachir Lawal, has indicated a shift in the criteria for selecting presidential candidates ahead of the 2027 Nigerian election, moving away from the standards used in the 2023 elections.

Babachir lists criteria for candidate north backs
Babachir Lawal also revealed a new political strategy for the North ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Legit.ng understands that Labour Party 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former vice president Atiku Abubakar have indicated interest in contesting for the 2027 presidential election and to President Bola Tinubu's government.

But speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, August 11, Babachir Lawal stated that a new forum of northern politicians will prioritise unity and vote as a bloc, and their support will be given to a candidate who demonstrates a clear understanding of the region’s challenges, regardless of their ethnic or political background.
Buttressing his point, Lawal, a former supporter of Labour Party’s Peter Obi, suggested he may not back Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023 elections, in the upcoming polls.

When asked about his stance on Obi for 2027, Lawal remarked:
“Things have changed. The parameters we used to evaluate our candidate in 2023 are going to be different this time.”
He emphasised that political dynamics have evolved, leaving his support uncertain as he assesses new priorities for the election.
“They say a day in politics is long.
“Things have moved on, so we’ll see when we get there. We’ll see how it goes,” he said.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Babachir Lawal criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu regarding appointments.
In a trending interview, Lawal said President Bola Tinubu did not win the 2023 elections and also disclosed the alleged winner.
Lawal, who was removed from his position as SGF in 2017 under former president Muhammadu Buhari, is a long-standing critic of Tinubu's government.
Jonathan or Peter Obi: North's best choice revealed
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that PDP chieftain, Umar Sani, said he preferred ex-president Goodluck Jonathan as his party’s presidential candidate rather than Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party.
He stated that the North will prefer Jonathan to Obi, and Jonathan’s return to power for another four years will complete the South’s eight years.
