The UK Government has released a comprehensive guide detailing how residents can fast-track a passport application when the standard service is not quick enough.
The guide outlines two distinct urgent passport services, each with its own timeline, cost structure, and eligibility requirements.

The official GOV.UK website stated that both options require applicants to book an in-person appointment at a passport office, which can be scheduled up to three weeks in advance. Appointments typically last no longer than 10 minutes.
1 Day Premium Service
The fastest available option is the 1 Day Premium service, which costs £239.50 (NGN 438,336.34) for a standard adult passport or £253.50 (NGN 463,969.26) for a 54-page frequent traveller passport.
Applicants must note that the earliest available appointment is two days after submitting an application, not the same day.
At the appointment, the old passport must be handed in, and the new document will be ready for collection from the passport office within four hours.
This service is exclusively available for adult passport renewals and cannot be used for first-time applications, child passports, or replacements.
1 Week Fast Track Service
The second option, the 1 Week Fast Track, is more flexible in terms of who can use it. Beyond simple renewals, it also covers changes to personal details such as name, place of birth, or gender, as well as replacements for lost, stolen, or damaged passports, and applications for child passports.
Appointments under this service can be booked as early as the following day after applying. The new passport is then delivered by courier one week after the appointment.
Pricing for this service is as follows: £192 (NGN 350,999.04) for an adult passport, £206 (NGN 376,592.72) for a 54-page adult frequent traveller passport, £156.50 (NGN 286,200.58) for a child passport, and £170.50 (NGN 311,794.46) for a 54-page child frequent traveller passport.
There are situations where neither urgent service applies. People applying for their very first adult passport must use the standard service.
Anyone currently outside the UK is advised to apply for an emergency travel document instead.
Those who have already submitted a passport application and are still waiting are strongly advised not to pay for an urgent service, as it will not speed up the existing application and will instead result in a £34.50 (NGN 63,070.14) administrative fee.
The guide also notes that appointments can be changed free of charge provided the change is made more than 48 hours before the scheduled time.
Cancellations requested less than 48 hours before an appointment, or missed appointments entirely, will not qualify for a refund.
For travellers facing a medical emergency, bereavement, or government-related travel, the GOV.UK guide recommends calling the Passport Adviceline directly rather than using the online booking system.

British citizenship is the most common category, but holders of overseas, subject, and protected person statuses are also eligible.
