Peter Obi Under Fire Over His Adjective For Olubadan: "You Are Not Polished"

  • Peter Obi has again been dragged after he referred to the newly installed Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, as "my dear brother"
  • Reno Omokri, who reacted to this, argued that Ibadan predated the precolonial era, which should not be compared to towns without heads
  • Omokri said the position of the Olubadan should be respected and wondered if Obi could address a monarch in the north in such a manner

Peter Obi, a 64-year-old 2027 presidential hopeful, has again come under fire for referring to the 81-year-old Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, as "my dear brother."

Reno Omokri, a former presidential aide, tackled Obi for his choice of words, arguing that the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party lacked the diplomacy to become Nigerian president.

Omokri pointed out that Ladoja is no longer an ordinary Nigerian but a royal father who "should not be flippantly addressed as 'my dear brother'."

The former presidential aide explained that Ibadan city predated the colonial era and cannot be compared to "some warrant chief created by the British in a land without natural rulers."

Why Obi should respect Olubadan - Omokri

He argued that the Olubadan deserved honourable treatment because of his status. He questioned if the former governor of Anambra state could call an Emir in northern Nigeria "dear brother". He warned Obi not to do to the Olubadan what he cannot do to an Emir in the north.

His tweet reads in part:

"Do you now see why you are not a fit and proper person to be Nigeria's President? You are a low-cultured individual who lacks class and diplomacy. Yoy are not polished. The only thing you respect is money. You are a trader, not a leader. A person like you is more suited to man a stall at Onitsha Market than be the man at Aso Rock."

Nigerians react to Obi's comment on Olubadan

However, the former presidential aide's post has started generating mixed reactions from some Nigerians. Below are some of their reactions:

Felix Jarikre asked Omokri to delete the tweet:

"Reno, for the sake of your integrity, quickly delete this post. I'm sure if you had read the congratulatory tweets of both President Tinubu and former VP Atiku first, you'd have held your fire! These two men called the Olubadan 'my brother...friend.' Unfortunately, your hasty anger concerning PO this time is thoroughly misplaced."

Abbey Odeyemi logically countered Jarikre's claim:

"Unlike Peter Obi, the president and Oba Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja had personal relationships of over 30 years. Apart from this, the age difference between Oba Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja and Peter Obi is almost 20years. He should learn how to address people appropriately."

Mafo pointed out:

"Even if the Olubadan is 20 years old, it is disrespectful to address him as my dear brother. Can Obi address Obi of Onitsha, my brother? Let's have respect for the traditional leaders."

Yinyinola tweeted:

"Olubadan is referred to as ‘His Imperial Majesty’, not ‘His Royal Highness’."
