Tinubu Told To Prioritise Oil Drilling in Northern Nigeria

FCT, Abuja - President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been urged to prioritise the resumption of oil exploration activities in the frontier wells of Kolmani and the Lake Chad basin.
The North-east governors said reviving oil exploration is crucial for boosting the region’s economy and improving security.

Legit.ng reports that the northeast geopolitical zone comprising Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe States.
The governors stated this during a visit to the president in Aso Rock on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
As reported by TheCable, speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Borno state governor, Babagana Zulum, said:
“Resuming exploration activities would complement military operations and accelerate development in the sub-region.”
Governor Zulum said the northeast region had “suffered so much environmental and developmental setbacks arising from a long period of neglect and abandonment”.
Zulum said the northeast governors hold President Tinubu in high esteem and commended him for sustaining the fight against insurgency.
The governor also hailed Tinubu for implementing measures to alleviate the impacts of flooding, desertification, and other environmental challenges.
“The governors are committed to partnering with him in his determination to provide good governance for Nigeria, with the goal of leaving lasting legacies and landmarks for the country”.
Oil exploration activities in northern Nigeria
The late President Muhammadu Buhari flagged off and resumed oil drilling campaign in the following locations in teh northern part of the country:
- Kolmani Integrated Development Project (KIPRO) is situated on the boundary of Bauchi and Gombe states.
- The spud-in of the Ebenyi-A exploration well is located in Obi local government area (LGA) in Nasarawa state.
- The Wadi-B well in Jere local government area of Borno state.

Location of 4 new oil wells in north
Recall that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) restated its commitment to oil and gas development in the northern part of Nigeria.
The national oil company confirmed that it drilled four oil wells in Kolmani, Bauchi state.
Latest data from NUPRC revealed that Nigeria's crude oil rose to 1.8 million barrels per day, and averaged 1.78 million bpd.
NNPC to resume oil search in border of 2 northern states
NNPC announced plans to resume oil drilling in the Kolmani field, located between Bauchi and Gombe states.
The energy company also said work will resume in June and will also restart work on the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project.
It is estimated that the Kolmani project holds an estimated one billion barrels of oil and 500 billion cubic feet of gas.
