Federal Govt Considering Simon Ekpa’s Repatriation After 6-Year Jail Term in Finland

FCT, Abuja - The President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government has hinted at the possibility of repatriating pro-Biafran agitator, Simon Ekpa, to Nigeria at the end of his six-year jail term in Finland.

Legit.ng recall that the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland sentenced Ekpa to six years in prison for terrorism-related crimes and other offences.

As reported by The Punch, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said Nigeria will assess Ekpa’s situation before making a decision.

“The Nigerian government will assess the situation and take decisions in the best interest of the country.”

Similarly, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), hailed the judgement of the Finnish court.

Fagbemi, in a statement, said:

“We commend the Finnish authorities for supporting Nigeria in the fight against insecurity and see this as a signal of future collaboration.
“Appropriate further actions will be taken upon receipt and study of a copy of the court’s judgment.”

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, described the ruling as “a landmark victory in the global effort to combat terrorism and violent extremism.”

Musa said the efforts of Nigeria’s law enforcement, intelligence agencies, and diplomats demonstrated the power of international collaboration.

The Director of Defence Information, Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, made this known in a statement.

“The conviction reinforces the principle that those who incite violence and fund terrorism will be held accountable, regardless of their location.”

Omokri attacks Obi over Simon Ekpa's conviction

Recall that former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, reacted to Ekpa's conviction in Finland.

Omokri mentioned what 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, would have done if Ekpa were convicted in Nigeria.

Legit.ng recalls that the Paijat-Hame District Court has sentenced Finnish-Nigerian separatist leader Ekpa to six years in prison.
