Panic Erupts as Fuel Tanker Explodes on Apapa-Oshodi Expressway

Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Lagos state - No fewer than three yet-to-be-identified persons were seriously injured when fire gutted a tanker along the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway in the Iyana-Isolo area of Lagos.

It was gathered that no life was lost in the multiple auto crash that occurred on Sunday afternoon, August 31, 2025.

Men of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service have successfully contained the raging fire.

As reported by Vanguard, the ill-fated tanker, conveying 45,000 litres of diesel from Apapa inward Oshodi, had collided with a commercial minibus.

The tanker was later struck by two trailers — a flatbed and the other a 40-foot container truck, triggering an immediate fire outbreak.

The Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said personnel and equipment were immediately deployed to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 13:05 hours through the Isolo and Bolade Fire Stations.

“A preliminary investigation attributes the incident to the collision involving the diesel tanker and the commercial minibus, which narrowly escaped without casualties, before the subsequent involvement of the trailers.
“Firefighting operations were swiftly carried out, with the fire successfully extinguished and mop-up operations completed to ensure the safety of the motoring public.
“Three individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries in the incident and have been taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.”

Adeseye said the rescue team evacuated the wreckage of the vehicles from the road to restore free flow of traffic in the area.

Fuel tanker explodes in Kaduna state

A fuel-laden tanker exploded in Zaria, Kaduna state, after being involved in a crash, killing several people on Monday morning, August 11, 2025.

The crash, involving two tankers and two passenger cars, triggered five loud explosions and a massive fire.

Emergency services cordoned off the area, with rescue operations ongoing and casualties yet to be confirmed.

In a similar story, Legit.ng reported that five people were confirmed dead and nine others injured in a tragic road crash involving a Mazda bus and a truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

A separate petrol tanker explosion at NASFAT junction injured two people and destroyed six vehicles, causing widespread traffic disruption.

Another tanker and an 18-tyre truck fell near Ogere Bridge, further compounding the day’s traffic woes with extensive road blockage.
