Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has disclosed that the process of identifying and prosecuting terrorism financiers in the country is ongoing.

Speaking on Thursday night, August `21, during an appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today, General Musa explained that the delay in naming these financiers is largely due to legal complexities and international links.
“I think the process is on. The delay is because it has to do with a lot of legal issues and because some of them have funds coming from outside. We cannot act on those from within. We know them,” he said.
Local and foreign financiers under scrutiny
General Musa added that some financiers operate within Nigeria, using individuals and motorcycles to remit funds daily into various accounts.
“The local ones normally employ a few individuals, provide motorcycles for them, and those are remitting funds daily into some accounts. So, it’s being tracked. They try to circulate those monies and that’s why we need to track the funds,” he explained.
NFIU hailed for tracking financial links
The Defence Chief commended the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) for its efforts in exposing financial networks supporting terrorism.
“The NFIU has been doing so much. Apart from the intelligence setup, financial links are also being followed, and arrests have been made. I can assure you the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, are all working seriously to ensure we address these issues,” he said.
Political actors financing insecurity
General Musa further revealed that other security agencies, including the State Security Services and the National Intelligence Agency, are investigating Nigerian politicians who allegedly fund insecurity for personal gain.
“Criminals work together. Bandits and terrorists synergise their efforts because they want to make money and ensure communities are suffering,” he noted.
When asked whether political actors behind terrorism had been identified, General Musa responded: “Work is in progress.”

Nigeria continues to grapple with terrorist attacks across regions, particularly in the North-east and North-west.
While Boko Haram remains active in the North-east, the North-west, especially Zamfara state, has been plagued by bandit attacks, resulting in hundreds of deaths and the displacement of thousands of residents.
ADC chieftain urges military to expose terrorism financiers
David Itopa, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has called on the Nigerian military to move beyond “mere propaganda” and take decisive action against terrorism financiers.
Speaking with Legit.ng on Sunday, August 24, Itopa urged the military to publish the names of sponsors, prosecute them without delay, and prioritise saving the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
“The time for half-measures is over. If the military truly knows the financiers, then it must mention names, prosecute them, and stop issuing vague statements while innocent citizens continue to die,” he said.

Previously, Legit.ng reported that the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, linked the recent surge in killings and bandit attacks across Nigeria to political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 general elections.
