The event is scheduled to hold on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at the Mariam Babangida Leisure Park, opposite Dennis Osadebay University in Asaba, Delta state.
Tony Elumelu's viral encounter with graduate
The controversy began during a graduation ceremony for the United Bank of Africa (UBA) Graduate Management Accelerated Programme (GMAP) in Lagos on Thursday, August 20, 2026. The young trainee addressed Tony Elumelu, the bank's outgoing chairman, casually by saying, "Good morning, Tony."
Elumelu publicly corrected her, stating his preference for formal titles and asking to be addressed as 'Mr Elumelu,' 'TOE,' or 'Chairman,' noting that he did not subscribe to first-name corporate familiarity. The incident sparked widespread online debate over corporate culture, hierarchy and etiquette.
What the Delta state govt support package covers
The full offer includes round-trip flight tickets to Asaba, five-star hotel accommodation, VIP access to the summit, and a guided tour of developmental projects across Delta state.
On top of that, the graduate stands to receive an ambassadorial role with the Delta Social Media Summit.
Ossai made clear that the gesture is not just financial.
He said he wants to give the young woman a platform to publicly share her perspective on the incident, describing it as a chance to "turn this pain into purpose." He added that she would be welcomed and "won't be disappointed."
Ossai appeals to Nigerians to stop criticising the graduate
While acknowledging that the graduate made a mistake during her encounter with Elumelu, Ossai called on Nigerians to ease up on the criticism, noting that prolonged social media attacks can have serious mental health consequences.
"I know the internet can be harsh. Depression is real and words cut deep," he wrote.
He urged the public to shift from condemnation to compassion:
"She made a mistake, but we don't need to torment her daily; she needs our support."

The gesture is not necessary -Analyst
A social affairs commentator, Ayo Adeleke, noted that while the reward to the lady is well-intentioned, it is not necessary.
He stated:
"This reward is well-intentioned, but is it really necessary? A simple viral moment should not suddenly become a government-sponsored rehabilitation project. If we must support young graduates, let it be based on merit and need—not because someone became famous for a workplace etiquette controversy."

The move came after Heirs Energies acquired a 20.07% stake in Seplat through a $500 million equity deal, making it the company’s largest shareholder.
Tony Elumelu, who also chairs United Bank for Africa, would be proposed as a non-executive director during Seplat’s 13th Annual General Meeting scheduled for May 20, 2026.
