Subjects Limit for Primary School Pupils

Under the new guidelines, pupils in Primary 1 to 3 are now expected to offer a minimum of nine and a maximum of ten subjects. For those in Primary 4 to 6, the range has been set between ten and twelve subjects. The Ministry stated that this adjustment was designed to ensure that younger learners are not overwhelmed, while still receiving a broad and balanced education.

Subjects Limit for Secondary School Students

At the Junior Secondary School level, students will be permitted to offer between twelve and fourteen subjects. Meanwhile, Senior Secondary School students are expected to take between eight and nine subjects. The Ministry noted that this reduction at the senior level was intended to allow learners to focus more deeply on core and elective subjects relevant to their future academic or vocational paths.

Technical Schools Subjects Range

For technical schools, the new subjects limit has been set between nine and eleven. Officials explained that this range reflects the specialised nature of technical education, which requires a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

The Ministry of Education emphasised that the curriculum review was part of a broader strategy to improve educational outcomes nationwide. It added that the changes would be implemented in phases, with support provided to schools to ensure a smooth transition.
