460 Visually Impaired Candidates wrote 2021 WASSCE, Council Discloses
- After 45 days, the West African Examination Council released the results of the 2021 Senior School Certificate Examinations
- According to the Council's head of national office in Nigeria, Patrick Areghan, 460 visually impaired candidates sat for this year's exam
- Areghan noted further that WAEC is working to ensure the digitalisation of its certificate henceforth

Lagos state- The West African Examination Council (WAEC) revealed on Monday, November 22, that 460 visually impaired candidates wrote the Senior Secondary Schools Certificate Examination in 2021.
In addition to that, 1079 other candidates, with varying degrees of Special Needs, registered for the examination, out of which 582 others have impaired hearing.
The Punch reports that WAEC Head of National Office (HNO), Patrick Areghan, while announcing the release of the results, added that 362 are spastic mentally challenged and 59 others are physically challenged.

Areghan said:

“All these candidates were adequately provided for in the administration of the examination. Their results have been processed and are also being released along with those of other candidates."
The digitalisation of certificate
According to him, the council is currently working with a technology company on certificate digitalisation.
“We are now ready with the product and it will soon be launched. This will make it possible for candidates and other stakeholders to access the exact replica or images of candidates’ certificate online.”
Matters arising
The council boss noted that the increasing use of cell phones in the examination hall in spite of the existing ban and organised cheating in some schools are other big concerns.
He added that:
“All the cases are being investigated and reports of the investigations will be presented to the appropriate committee of the council for determination in due course.
“The Committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates through their various schools.”
Examination malpractice
Areghan said there was an urgent need for moral regeneration, urging religious leaders and other stakeholders to assist the council in the fight against examination malpractice.
NIN requirement
Speaking further, the HNO stated that there would be no going back on its "No NIN, No Registration” requirements for all persons seeking to sit for council’s examination beginning from 2022.
He affirmed thus:
“Schools will be expected to supply the NIN of every candidate as part of the registration requirements.
“This is in line with the directive of the Minister of Education. We advise all schools to comply accordingly. They should ensure that all their SSS 3 students, indeed all students to register to obtain their NIN in order to make their registration process seamless.”
Jubilation as 16-year-old girl wins big as best WAEC student
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that a 16-year-old girl, Joy Abahi Amuh, received a cash prize of N500,000 as the best graduating student in the 2020 West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Amuh, a student of St. Paul Secondary School, Otukpo in Benue State was handed the cash prize at the sixth annual literacy project organised by the Eunice Spring of Life Foundation in partnership with the Benue Investment and Property Company.
It was reported that the group managing director of BIPLC, Alex Adum, said the cash prize would help Amuh pursue a quality education.
