Emirates Airlines Bans Power Bank Usage on Flights, Announces Implementation Date
- Emirates Airlines will implement new safety regulations on October 1, prohibiting the use of power banks on flights to mitigate the risks posed by lithium batteries
- Customers can still carry one power bank onboard under 100 watt-hours, but it cannot be used to charge devices or be charged using the aircraft's power supply
- The airline emphasised that this decision follows an increase in fire-related incidents linked to lithium batteries, aiming to ensure safety and allow cabin staff to respond promptly

A power bank, a portable rechargeable device, is primarily used to supply electricity to other electronic devices such as computers, tablets, cell phones, and cameras.
The Dubai-based airline stated in a press release on Friday that the decision followed a thorough safety investigation, The Cable reported.

According to the airline, the rule aims to reduce the growing risks associated with incidents involving lithium batteries on airplanes.
“Emirates customers are still permitted to carry one power bank onboard, with specific conditions listed below. However, power banks may not be used in the aircraft cabin—neither to charge devices from the power bank nor to be charged using the aircraft’s power supply,” Emirates said.
The airline emphasised the new regulations, including: "Customers may carry one power bank that is under 100 watt-hours."
"Power banks may not be used to charge any personal devices onboard. Charging a power bank using the aircraft’s power supply is not permitted,” the carrier added.
“All power banks accepted for transport must have capacity rating information available.”
"Power banks may not be placed in the overhead stowage bin onboard the aircraft. They must now be stored in the seat pocket or in a bag under the seat in front of you. Power banks are not permitted in checked luggage (this is an existing rule)."
Emirates stated that the primary reason for the revised rules was the increase in fire-related incidents linked to lithium batteries in the aviation sector.
“Power banks primarily use lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries. In the event of overcharging or damage, these batteries may experience thermal runaway—a dangerous chain reaction that can lead to fires, explosions, or the release of toxic gases,” the airline added.
Emirates explained that while many entry-level power banks lack inherent safeguards against overcharging, newer cell phones, which have such features, increase the risk of overheating or ignition.
The airline emphasised that it aims to ensure cabin staff can respond promptly to power bank-related situations by prohibiting their use and mandating storage that is easily accessible from the cabin.
“Safety is one of Emirates’ core values and a cornerstone of all its operations and practices,” the airline concluded.
