Commonwealth Games - Oluwatoyin Adesanmi Wins Gold In Weightlifting

Nigeria keeps winning more medals at the ongoing 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with Oluwatoyin Adesanmi winning the gold and Obioma Okoli claiming the silver medal at the women’s 63kg weightlifting competition on July 27, 2014, Sunday. 

The two teammates showed an equal result of 207 kg from two exercises, but Adesanmi finished ahead due to smaller body weight (62 kg against 63 kg).

 

19-year-old athlete, representing India, P. Yadav took the bronze with 202 kg.

 

The total number of Nigeria’s medals at the major sporting event for the Commonwealth countries is now 6. All of them have been earned by the weightlifters. This places Nigeria in 2nd position of this category, behind India with 9, but way ahead of Malaysia, whose weightlifters got one gold and one silver.

In the overall medal standings Nigeria is at the 9th place.

Australia lead, with 26 gold, 73 total. England chase the athletes of The Green Continent with 23 gold, 57 total, while the hosts, Scotland, occupy 3rd position with 11 gold, 30 total.
