5 Contemporary Nigerian Artists Inspired By Fela Music

Afro beat legend came, saw and conquered the music industry though he is dead, he left a great impact in the Nigerian music industry such that contemporary musicians are still influenced by his style of music.

Aside his children Femi and Seun and his protegee son, Dede Mabiaku who are doing his style of Afro beat while Lagbaja whose style is a deviation from Fela's own, some contemporary musicians have been inspired by the Abami Eda or Baba 70's style of music. Wizkid:

Wizkid’s jaiye Jaiye saw him deviating from the hip hop lane he started with to Afro beat. To drive home his arrival as an Afro pop artist, Wizkid features Femi Kuti in Jaiye Jaiye. One of Fela hit songs is Ojuelegba, Wizkid did another Ojuelegba, not a re-mix but with Afro beat flavour and so far that has been his greatest.

D’banj

He is one of the few contemporary acts in Nigeria music industry who were inspired by Fela’s style of music. From his fashion sense to his stage craft Dapo Oyebanjo otherwise known as D’banj has left much from the Abami Eda. While performing D’banj at times goes bare-chest dancing the Fela way.

Sound Sultan:

Like Fela Anikulapo Kuti, hissongs just like those of Fela’s passes conscience messages. The conscientious singer’s songs like Jagbajantis, Craze World. During the 2014 AFRIMA awards, Sound Sultan dressed like Fela mimicked Fela’s songs.

Burna Boy:

His latest single Soke has a lyric of Baba 70, ‘I Never Tell You Finish’. For Burna Boy, his grandpa Benson Idonije worked closely with Abami Eda and this has helped influenced his style of music when he decided to embrace music. Burna Boy carries a tattoo of Fela around.

Oritsefemi:

If he thought had experienced success with his song, Mercies of The Lord, Double Wahala was the hit that transformed him into the big league. Being a fan of Fela, Oritsefemi once said that he did not contacted any of Fela’s children before he used his lyric and after the success the song recorded, Oritsefemi who is always at the shrine went to the family and they gave their consent.
