FG tasks S’East govs on education
The Federal Government on Tuesday in Enugu called on South-East governors to establish more schools in their states within one year to address the challenge of accessing education, especially among male children.
The Federal Government also promised to continue to accord the education sector top priority, adding that it was committed to providing Nigerian children with qualitative education.
Speaking at the inauguration of the national ‘Back to School’ campaign in the South-East, President Goodluck Jonathan said education was key to the development of skills that would drive the industries in the South-East zone.
Jonathan urged the South-East governors to partner local governments, communities and traditional rulers in their states to identify unique challenges of the boy-child education in the region.
He said, “We must, looking at the regulatory framework, devise workable solutions to encourage and keep our male children in school.”
Represented at the occasion by the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayytu Ahmed Rufai, he said, “Where the boys have already left school, uncompleted, we must look at the possibility of taking education to them in forms that are convenient for them, even for few hours a week.”
