Special Parade in Abuja as Major General Farouq Yahaya Assumes Command, Becomes 22nd Chief of Army Staff

- After the celebrations of his appointment, Major General Yahaya has now officially assumed his duty of securing Nigeria

- The 22nd Chief of Army Staff assumed command at the Army Headquarters in Abuja on Friday, May 28

- Earlier, Yahaya had paid last respect to his immediate predecessor, Ibrahim Attahiru, who recently died in a plane crash

Major General Farouq Yahaya on Friday, May 28, assumed office as Nigeria's 22nd Chief of Army Staff at the Army (COAS) Headquarters in Abuja.

The Defence Headquarters had on Thursday, May 27, announced President Muhammadu Buhari's appointment of Yahaya as the new COAS.

The newly appointed COAS had earlier paid his last respects to his former boss and predecessor, Late Lt-Gen Ibrahim Attahiru.

Major-General Yahaya paid homage to Late Attahiru after signing the condolence register at the theatre command headquarters of Operation Hadin Kai in Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.

Nigerians congratulate Yahaya

Ray Momoh said:

"Congratulations. Remember soldier go, Soldier come. Barrack remain do your best by respecting the human rights of Nigerian"

Godfrey Gantip said:

"Congratulations Sir, More Grace and Wisdom of God to you and I pray for God protection over the entire Army of Nigeria"

Fakolade Oluwafemi Temitope said:

"Congratulations sir. May the protection of almighty God be upon you and your entire team."

Musbau Adeyemi said:

"Congratulations, may your tenure be a successful one and may it be a comforting one for Nigerians at large."

Fears of missive retirement

Meanwhile, several media reports indicate that serving members of Regular Course 35, 36 and 37 in the Army, Air Force and Navy, may be forced out of service with the appointment of Major General Farouk Yahaya, as the new COAS.

Legit.ng gathered that the new COAS is a member of the 37 Regular Course.

A reliable military source reportedly said that the senior officers may be asked to turn in their papers for ease of administration or be posted out to head tri-service institutions depending on the discretion of the military council.

Jubilation over Yahaya's appointment

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that some soldiers in the Theatre of War became happy after they discovered that Major General Yahaya was appointed as the new COAS.

A video clip published by a Twitter user @Abbakar1030 on Thursday, May 27, shows the troops shouting with so much joy and eagerness as an official broke the news to them.

The gallant soldiers expressed their excitement after the personnel revealed that there would be a moment for the army to have a special celebration.
