Manchester United may have been handed a transfer boost after Real Madrid placed a £60 million price tag on centre-back Raphael Varane.
The Red Devils have been linked with a move for the French World Cup winner as a potential partner for Harry Maguire in their quest to solidify their backline.
Sources say Los Blancos will not entertain the £40 million opening bid from the Premier League outfit who are planning to express formally their interest in the defender.
Meanwhile, Real are scared of losing him for free when his deal enters the final year in 2022, so, they are willing to cash in on him early enough according to Daily Mail quoting Spanish outlet Diario AS.
The publication added that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has personally told his employers to sign the defender who has played 40 times for Zinedine Zidane's side this season.
However, the Frenchman will have to compete with the likes of Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones at Old Trafford.
Although Los Blancos will not allow the defender to leave without trying to keep him at the Bernabeu beyond the expiration of his contract with them.
Varane has won four Champions League titles among several other domestic and continental trophies at the club since he joined them in 2011.
