Following the emergence of Usman Alkali Baba as the new acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari has explained why he chose him.

Buhari approved the appointment of Baba with immediate effect. The minister of police affairs, Mohammed Maigari Dangyadi, announced this on Tuesday, April 6, while briefing journalists.

The Nigerian leader on Thursday, April 15, said he picked Baba to head the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) because he has the necessary experience to perform in the position, The Cable reports.

Buhari made this known while speaking with state house correspondents after his arrival from the United Kingdom where he went on medical vacation for two weeks

He explained that he was given a list of candidates by a committee from the minister of police affairs out of whom he chose Baba, Premium Times reports.

According to the president, he has “high expectations of Baba who has been in the force for a long time. He added that the acting IGP went through all the trainings and knows his job.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Yemi Osinbajo, the vice president of Nigeria, on Wednesday, April 7, decorated the new IGP with his rank in the State House, Abuja. Read more:

Following the announcement of the new position, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo decorated the IGP on April 7, while Buhari was in London on a routine medical checkup.

In a related development, some revelation has emerged as to why the tenure extension of Mohammed Adamu, the former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) was cut short.

The disclosure was made by the minister of police affairs, Muhammad Dingyadi, who told journalists on Tuesday, April 6, that the power to make such a decision resides only with the president.

The minister added that Adamu's successor, Usman Alkali Baba was chosen after from high-ranking and proficient officers who are fit for the job in all ramifications.
