- Governor El-Rufai has urged Nigeria to abandon the rotational system in electing Nigeria's president
- Babatunde Fashola, the minister of works and housing, had on Monday, November 23, urged the APC to honour the zoning agreement
- The governor, however, said that zoning arrangement would not solve Nigeria's problems
Contrary to the call by the minister of works and housing, Babatunde Fashola, for the rotation of the presidency among the geo-political zones in Nigeria, the governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has said the zoning process among political parties would not solve the economic problems facing the country.
Premium Times reports that the governor said this on Tuesday, November 24, when he spoke at a plenary session on “Rethinking Sub-National Competitiveness” at the ongoing Nigerian Economic Summit (NES).
Legit.ng gathered that zoning the presidency between the north and south has remained a norm in the country’s uninterrupted two-decade electoral process since 1999.
According to the report, there has been subtle anxiety across parties and the political class in the country in the past few weeks about rotating the presidency between the north and south come 2023.
Legit.ng recalls that the Ebonyi state governor, David Umahi, had recently defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing his former party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), of not considering the southeast in assigning presidential tickets over the years.
El-Rufai, however, suggested while delivering his remarks that “everyone should be given an equal opportunity” to run for office, and not based on ethnicity.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the minister of works and housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, advised the leadership of the ruling APC to respect and honour the agreement reached at the formative stage of the party for zoning to take place.
It was reported that Fashola is the first APC leader revealing that indeed there was a zoning agreement between chieftains of the party in the past.
