Police confirm bandits kidnapped Imam, 17 other worshippers at Zamfara mosque

- The abduction of an Imam and other Muslim worshippers in Zamfara by bandits has been confirmed by the police

- Zamfara police spokesperson, Mohammed Shehu, said some community members were also killed by the bandits

- Shehu, however, said the police have started making efforts to rescue the victims

The police command in Zamfara state has confirmed the abduction of an Imam and 17 other Muslim worshippers in a community in the state.

Legit.ng reported that the abduction was carried out by bandits on motorcycles who attacked a Jumat mosque in Zamfara on Friday, November 20.

The police spokesperson, Mohammed Shehu, said the bandits arrived during a congregational prayer at Dutsen Gari, a farming community in Kanoma district of Maru local government area, Channels TV reported.

The news media stated that the police confirmed that some members of the community were killed during the attack.

Shehu said efforts have been set in motion to rescue the abducted persons.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Philip Shekwor, the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa state, who was kidnapped at his residence on Saturday, November 21, had been found dead.

A source close to the family and a leader of the APC in Nasarawa confirmed Shekwor's death on Sunday, November 22.

Similarly, two people were allegedly abducted after unknown gunmen attacked the residence of a member, House of Representatives, Abubakar Yahaya Kusada.

The incident was said to have occurred on Saturday night, November 21, at the lawmaker's Kusada residence.

Kusada is a former speaker, Katsina state House of Assembly and current member of the House of Representatives representing Kusada, Kankia and Ingawa federal constituency in Katsina state.

In another related report, suspected bandits who kidnapped six senior police officers, Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs), in Katsina state are demanding N100m ransom for their release.

The abducted ASPs were among the nine who were just promoted to their current rank. The officers were attached to the Mobile Police Squadron 6, Maiduguri, Borno state.

The police officers were recently demobilised from the riot unit and eight of them were on their way to the Zamfara state police command on a transfer when they were ambushed in the Dogondaji area of Katsina state and taken into the forest.
