Mondaire was born on 18 May 1987 in Nyack, New York, USA. A single mother brought him up in Spring Valley New York, but there are no details about his father. Unfortunately, his mother became ill, and he went to live with his grandparents.

Jones' grandfather worked as a janitor at Pomona Middle School while his grandmother was a home cleaner in the hamlets of Congers and Hillcrest. While Jones was young, his grandfather faced adverse racial discrimination in school.

Education

Mondaire went to public schools in the East Ramapo Central School District for his elementary and high school studies. Later, he was admitted to Stanford University and graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor's Degree. Jones then joined Harvard Law School and graduated in 2013.

The politician began his career in the United States Department of Justice during Bar\rack Obama's tenure. He also worked for Davis Polk and Wardwell as a law clerk for Andrew L Carter Junior of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.

He went ahead and worked for the Department of Law at Westchester County. Mondaire offered pro bono legal assistance through the Legal Aid Society during his service as an attorney.

2020 Congressional campaign

During the 2020 elections, he announced his candidacy for the Democratic primary. He was vying to represent New York's 17th Congressional district against the incumbent Representative, Nita Lowey. Later, Nita announced that she was no longer seeking to be re-elected.

Some of the things he advocated for were:

  • Green New Deal
  • Police reforms
  • Medicare for All

With 42% of the total votes cast, he defeated the likes of attorney Adam Schleifer and State Assemblyman David Buchwald among others. On 14th July 2020, the Associated Press called the race for Jones.

The New York's 17th Congressional District is overwhelmingly Democratic, thus making Mondaire the presumptive Representative-elect. Jones is one of the first gay African Americans elected to the House of Representatives alongside Ritchie Torres from New York's 15th Congressional District.

During his campaigns in the 2020 elections, Jones received loads of support and boosts across the states. Several influential Democrats endorsed him. In February 2020, Senator Elizabeth Warren endorsed his candidature.
