Marilyn Strickland is an American-born politician and businesswoman. She served as the 38th mayor of Tacoma, Washington between 2010 and 2018. She is now the representative-elect for Washington's 10th Congressional District. She will begin her first term in office on 3rd January 2021.

Marilyn won the open seat in Washington DC's 10th Congressional District on 3rd November 2020. This made her the first Black representative from Washington State and the first woman from Korean American descent elected to Congress.

The American politician was born in 1962 in Seoul, South Korea. The names of Marilyn Strickland parents are not known to the public, but her father was an African-American while her mother was Korean. There are no details about her siblings.
In 1976, Marilyn Strickland family relocated to Tacoma, Washington and her father was stationed at Fort Lewis. The politician was brought up in the South End neighbourhood of Tacoma.
Education
She joined Mount Tahoma High School after her elementary school education. Later, she joined the University of Washington and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Business. She then enrolled at the Clark Atlanta University for her Masters in Business Administration.

Marilyn began her career as a clerical officer at Northern Life Insurance Company after attaining her degree from the University of Washington. At a luncheon, she was introduced to Seattle Mayor Norm Rice, who suggested that she should further her studies.
After attaining her master's degree, she joined Starbucks and served as a manager in its online business. She later helped in the launch of the City of Tacoma's public broadband cable service known as Click! She also worked with an advertisement agency to grow public support.
The politician served in the private sector for a few years before shifting to the public sector. She was elected to the Tacoma City Council, where she served for two years. Later, she was selected as the mayor of Tacoma and served in this position from 2010 to 2018.
In 2010, she was sanctioned by the Tacoma Board of Ethics for accepting frequent flyer miles from local businessperson for an official trip to Asia. Marilyn accepted the sanction and took back the amount she owed to the businessperson.
At the end of her tenure as the mayor of Tacoma, she attained another career opportunity. Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce approached Strickland to work as the president of the organization. After serving there for a while, she opposed the Seattle head tax.
Marilyn left the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce in early 2020.

After leaving the Metropolitan Chamber, she declared her candidacy for Washington's 10th Congressional District in the 2020 election. Incumbent Representative Denny Heck vacated the position.
Marilyn Strickland endorsements were primarily from several prominent political leaders and newspapers. On the 4th August 2020 jungle primary, she emerged in the first position, followed by State Representative Beth Doglio in a field of 19 candidates. The two proceeded to the November general election.
After the November election, Marilyn defeated her opponent, Beth Doglio thus becoming representative-elect. Strickland will assume office on 3rd January 2021. She will be the Pacific Northwest's first Black US Representative while serving as a member of the United States Congress.
