APC denies picking consensus candidate for Lagos East bye-elections

The Lagos state chapter of the All Progresives Congress (APC) has denied picking consensus candidates for the Lagos East senatorial and Kosofe Constituency 2 House of Assembly by-elections.

In a report by The Nation, this was disclosed in a statement by the state publicity secretary Seye Oladejo.

Oladejo urged the public to wait for the outcome of the primaries which will be held on Thursday, September 3.

Following the unfortunate demise of Senator Sikiru Bayo Osinowo and Hon. Tunde Braimoh the two seats became vacant.

Legit.ng recalls that Senator Osinowo died of complications from COVID-19 on Monday, June 15, 2020, in Lagos and was buried the same day in his country home in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun state.

While Braimoh a member of the Lagos state House of Assembly representing Kosofe Constituency II, died a few weeks before his 60th birthday.

His colleague, Honourable Sanni Ganeey Okanlawon from Kosofe Constituency 1, broke the news via social media.

The Lagos APC spokesperson speaking further said it is until the primary election is conducted before the candidates will be determined.

He urged the people of Lagos to disregard any speculation or rumors that Tokunbo Abiru has been picked as the APC’s consensus candidate for the senatorial election.

He said: “The party has not picked any candidate for the forthcoming by-elections. It is not until Thursday when the primary will be conducted that the candidates for the Lagos East Senatorial District and Kosofe 2 Constituency will be determined.”

“Lagosians should disregard any speculation or rumors making the rounds that the party already has picked Mr. Tokunbo Abiru as the party’s consensus candidate for the senatorial election.”

Recall that less than a week after the demise of the lawmaker representing Lagos East Senatorial District politicians within the APC started jostling for Osinowo's seat.

Leaders of the ruling party are said to be in a fix over the next step to take as politicians and their foot soldiers have started jostling for the vacant seat.

Already, the contest for who succeeds the late senator has commenced, as about 10 politicians have already been linked with the intrigues.

Names of possible replacements are already flying within the ruling party in Lagos as well as in the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state and the speaker of the state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, on Tuesday, June 23, both said the late Osinowo lived an exemplary life.

The two top government officials spoke at a special parliamentary session held in honour of the late Osinowo at the Lagos state House of Assembly, where he was a former member.

In his remark, which came after some lawmakers had spoken, Sanwo-Olu noted that a lot of people have expressed pain while talking about their experiences with Senator Osinowo.
