Edo indigenes in the diaspora have thrown their weight in support of the re-election bid of the Governor Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu.
At a virtual meeting with the governor, the diaspora community pledged to mobilise thousands of relatives and friends, resident in Edo state, to cast their votes for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming poll.
The zoom meeting organised by the Obaseki Joint Campaign Coalition, which comprises all Edo indigenes across the globe, was anchored by Comrade Lamptay Oriakhi Ikponmwosa.
Iknmwosa is a United Kingdom-based Edo indigene and chairman of Nigeria community in Newcastle.
Also involved in organising the meeting is Mrs Isoken Ibie, a Toronto-based Edo indigene and the state's cultural ambassador to Canada.
According to the organisers, the reelection of Obaseki/Shaibu for another term will give the administration the opportunity to consolidate its sustainable development drive across the state.
They also assured that the diaspora community will hold the globe to a standstill for the governor.
Responding to his endorsement, the governor said: “This election is about the promise of Edo. It is not just about what Governor Obaseki and the PDP have to offer Edo state, it is about how the expressions of our hopes and dreams will redefine a new Nigeria.
“Edo people are very enlightened and much more politically savvy than most of us politicians give them credit for. The last four general elections have clearly demonstrated this.
“Our people are articulate and outspoken about their opinions, dislikes, dreams and desires, which are now mostly expressed particularly in various social media platforms.”
Obaseki declared: “Our mission is to make Edo great again. Our vision is that before 2050, Edo will be the best state to live and prosper in Nigeria.”
Similarly, leaders and members of the PDP in Ovia north east local government area of Edo state have expressed optimism that Governor Obaseki and his deputy, will be reelected for a second term in office.
The leaders say Obaseki ought to be reelected on account of his administration’s sterling performance across all sectors of Edo state.
They also stated that they are anxiously waiting for the September 19 governorship election to win all their units for the PDP.
Meanwhile, the Edo state government recently showcased the Edo Modular Refinery, a key legacy project by the Obaseki-led administration to recalibrate the state’s industrial base is almost complete.
The refinery with a capacity for 5,500 barrels per day was birthed through a Memorandum of Understanding and is almost complete.
The project, sited at Ologbo in Ikpoba Okha local government area of the state, would produce from its feedstock 50 per cent of diesel (500,000 litres), 25 per cent of naphtha (300,000 litres) and 20 per cent of fuel oil (200,000) litres.
